Fold up to the inside any excess length until you or everyone agrees that’s the spot. Safety pin the folded-up part to the leg in one or two places.

At the work table, measure how much you folded under and write it down.

There is some advice to check that the legs of the jeans and the hem of each leg are even. This seems like good advice, and if you want to, yes, double-check. This also seems like something one could skip. If the legs or hems of your jeans are a bit uneven, is it something you’ve noticed earlier before measuring? If not, then just hem sans checking. It’s ok if my obvious, store-bought jeans look store-bought with their slightly uneven hems. This post will continue as if everything is even.

Hemming Jeans the Traditional Way

After you know how much the jeans need to be shortened you need to decide on the depth of the hem. A standard jeans hem is ⅝”. My jeans had a ½” hem. After you decide the amount, double it ; ⅝” final hem x 2 = 1 ¼”, a half inch hem doubled is one inch. This amount, the hem allowance, is then subtracted from the amount you want to shorten the jeans. Write down what this is.

Example: Shorten 2” | hem ½” x 2 = 1” for the hem allowance | 2” (amount to shorten) – 1” (hem allowance) = 1

Turn the jeans inside out and place on a flat work surface.

Measure up from the bottom edge of the pant leg the amount you wish to shorten the jeans and the amount after you subtracted the hem allowance. Mark these measurements on the jeans in three spots across the front of the leg and the back of the leg. I measure and mark in the center and about an inch in from the side seam and the inseam.

If you are shortening your jeans only a little, you may need to unpick the original hem in order to have enough fabric for the new hem. I like to start just past the inseam.

Feel the folded hem under the pants with your fingers as you sew to be sure the needle is catching it. You use the seam guides etched into the stitch plate on your machine as well.

Sew around the leg until the tip of the presser foot starts to tip upward at the side seam. The thing is, you always want the presser foot to be level. When it’s not level, it can’t feed the fabric evenly, and when that happens, the stitches cannot maintain the length you’ve selected. So stop sewing, leaving the needle down in the fabric, and get out one of the tools – a Jean-a-ma-Jig, a hump jumper, or a piece of cardboard – for going over the seam.

Using thin cardboard, folded to the needed thickness to sew over the thick seam

Place the tool of choice behind the needle, under the presser foot as the needle approaches the thick seam.
